Programme Overview

The Master of Science in Communication Engineering is a postgraduate programme by research, designed for engineers and researchers seeking deep expertise in modern communication systems. Candidates investigate wireless communications, signal processing, antenna systems, optical networks, and next-generation network architectures at a graduate level under academic supervision.

The programme runs full-time over 2–3 years or part-time over 3–5 years, culminating in a thesis and viva-voce examination. An MSc@Industry pathway is also available for candidates undertaking a full-time, industry-based research project.

Programme Highlights

Full research degree under academic supervision at FKTEN
Strong research groups in wireless communications, 5G/6G, and signal processing
State-of-the-art RF, antenna, and communication system laboratories
Industry-linked projects with MCMC, telcos, and defence agencies
Clear pathway to PhD and professional engineering advancement

MSc by Research vs MSc@Industry

Master of Science (by Research): Full-time (2–3 years) or part-time (3–5 years) thesis-based research under a UniMAP academic supervisor.

MSc@Industry: For technologists, engineers, or researchers currently employed in industry in Malaysia. The candidate undertakes a full-time, industry-based research project addressing a real-world industry problem, co-supervised by UniMAP and an industry field supervisor, with the publication requirement waived in favour of tangible outcomes (patents, IP, policies, or SOPs).

Research Journey

This programme is offered by research. There is no fixed coursework module list — candidates undertake a supervised thesis, with progress tracked through the following stages.

Enrol in the programme full-time or part-time.
Develop a research proposal under a FKTEN academic supervisor, aligned with the faculty's active research groups.
Conduct research — experimentation, data collection, analysis, and (where applicable) publication in indexed journals.
Submit and defend a thesis at a viva-voce examination.

Research Thesis

Candidates submit a Master's Thesis under a FKTEN academic supervisor. Topics align with the faculty's active research groups, and students are encouraged to publish in Scopus/ISI indexed journals.

Programme Outcomes

Upon completion, graduates will demonstrate the following competencies:

PO1: Apply advanced mathematical and engineering knowledge to analyse and design complex communication systems.
PO2: Critically evaluate current research literature and identify gaps in communication engineering knowledge.
PO3: Design and develop innovative communication system solutions for real-world and emerging applications.
PO4: Conduct rigorous research including experiment design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
PO5: Use advanced simulation tools (MATLAB, CST, NS3) and measurement equipment proficiently.
PO6: Communicate research findings through technical reports, journal papers, and presentations.
PO7: Demonstrate leadership and project management capability in research and professional environments.
PO8: Uphold research ethics, intellectual property standards, and professional responsibility.

Career Prospects

A Master's qualification from FKTEN significantly enhances career advancement, salary potential, and eligibility for senior technical and leadership roles.
